Terrarium

While flying the shuttle Archimedes through uncharted space, Ortegas is pulled through a wormhole and crashes on a barren, toxic moon. A stranded, wounded Gorn pilot protects her from its dangers. The two start out deeply distrustful, but slowly find common ground, sharing meals and even games, and survive together. On the Enterprise, an urgent vaccine delivery limits how long Pike can search. Uhura proposes partly entering the wormhole, overstating its chances of success to win his approval. On the moon, Ortegas and the Gorn ignite the atmosphere as a signal. When the rescue party beams down, La'An sees only an enemy and kills the Gorn. A Metron then appears to Ortegas and explains that it arranged the whole encounter to test whether humans and Gorn could make peace. La'An's reaction suggests more study is needed. The Metron erases its visit from her memory, but Ortegas still remembers the Gorn as a friend, and grieves.
