Through the Lens of Time

Junior medical officer Dana Gamble and Ortegas's brother Beto, a documentary maker, join a dig led by Chapel and Dr Korby, who hopes an ancient building holds the secret of immortality. When Gamble picks up a glowing orb, it explodes and destroys his eyes. He is beamed back to the Enterprise, but the rest of the team, now joined by Spock and La'An, are trapped inside. Dr M'Benga cannot restore Gamble's eyes, and scans show he is brain-dead even though he seems conscious. The team discover the building is a prison for the Vezda, parasitic beings from another dimension, and navigate its shifting structure to escape. On the ship, Captain Batel, seemingly prompted by her Gorn DNA, recognises that a Vezda possesses Gamble and attacks him. Locked in the brig, Gamble kills his guard and takes Scotty, Sam Kirk and Pelia hostage. Pelia kills him, and Scotty traps the Vezda in the transporter pattern buffer.
