With Pike away finding a lawyer for the arrested Una, the Enterprise sits in spacedock at Starbase 1 while the long-lived engineer Pelia oversees its upgrades. When La'An sends a distress call from the dilithium mining planet Cajitar IV, Spock is ordered to stay put. Instead he and the bridge crew take the ship without permission and head to the planet. There they uncover a plot by a syndicate of former Starfleet and Klingon soldiers who want to restart the Federation-Klingon war, using a cobbled-together false-flag ship to provoke a clash. M'Benga and Chapel, both war veterans, are captured but manage to escape, and Spock destroys the syndicate's ship moments before Klingon forces arrive, keeping the fragile peace intact. Afterwards, Admiral April warns that a far more dangerous threat is growing: the Gorn.
