Strange New Worlds

Haunted by a vision of the accident that will one day leave him gravely injured, Captain Christopher Pike has retreated to his Montana ranch. Admiral Robert April calls him back when his first officer, Una Chin-Riley, goes missing on a first contact mission to Kiley 279. Pike, Spock and security chief La'an Noonien-Singh are genetically altered to pass as locals and find a society much like 21st-century Earth, split into hostile factions on the edge of civil war. After observing the starship Discovery, the Kiley have turned warp technology into a devastating weapon. With Una rescued, Pike breaks General Order One: he appears before the planet's leaders, reveals the Enterprise and shows them Earth's own descent into civil war and nuclear catastrophe. Shaken, the factions agree to talk. April finds a way to spare Pike a court martial, Starfleet renames the order the Prime Directive, and Pike commits himself to a new mission of exploration.
