The episode follows three lower decks crews. On the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Che'Ta, ambitious Ma'ah wins Captain Dorg's favour, then discovers that Dorg has been secretly supplying the Pakleds with weapons, including bombs meant for Earth. On the Vulcan cruiser Sh'vhal, junior officer T'Lyn is rebuked for acting on hunches, but persuades her captain to investigate an anomaly that turns out to be Pakled weapons tests. On the Cerritos it is a day off: Mariner spends time with her mother, Tendi and Rutherford pair up with their department heads, and a lonely Boimler bluffs his way into Ransom's luau. When the Pakleds and the Che'Ta attack the Cerritos, Ma'ah, disgusted by Dorg's dishonour, kills him, takes command and withdraws. The Sh'vhal arrives to drive off the Pakleds, helped by T'Lyn's shield modulation. Her reward for showing initiative is a transfer to a Starfleet ship as a disciplinary measure.
