Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
On Romulus, the Senate rejects an approach from the Reman leader Shinzon and is promptly wiped out by a deadly weapon. On Earth, meanwhile, the Enterprise crew celebrate the wedding of Riker and Troi, with Data singing “Blue Skies” at the reception. Heading for Betazed and a second ceremony, the ship detects a positronic signal on Kolarus III, near the Romulan Neutral Zone, and the crew recover the scattered parts of B-4, a simpler android almost identical to Data. Admiral Janeway then sends the Enterprise to Romulus, where Shinzon, now praetor, says he wants peace with the Federation.
Shinzon proves to be a clone of Picard, created by the Romulans as part of a plan to replace him, then abandoned on Remus when the scheme was dropped. He has built an enormous warship, the Scimitar, armed with thalaron radiation, the weapon used on the Senate. Dr Crusher finds that Shinzon is dying from a flaw in his cloning, and only Picard's blood can save him. Shinzon seizes Picard, but Data, who has secretly swapped places with B-4, rescues him and learns that Shinzon intends to wipe out life on Earth.
In the Bassen Rift, where communications fail, the cloaked Scimitar ambushes the Enterprise. Two Romulan warbirds under Commander Donatra join the fight, Troi turns the Viceroy's earlier telepathic intrusion against him to track the ship, and Riker defeats the Viceroy hand to hand. With the Enterprise crippled, Picard rams the Scimitar, and Shinzon starts the thalaron weapon. Picard crosses over alone and kills Shinzon. Data follows, beams Picard back with an emergency transporter and destroys the weapon, losing his life. Back on Earth, Riker leaves to command the USS Titan, and Picard discovers that Data copied his memories into B-4, who begins to sing “Blue Skies”.
John Logan, Rick Berman and Brent Spiner spent nearly two years shaping the story, with Logan keen to explore the Romulans and their Reman neighbours. Patrick Stewart talked the team out of making Shinzon Picard's long-lost son. Stuart Baird, who admitted he was no Star Trek expert, was hired to bring fresh energy to the action, and the then little-known Tom Hardy won the role of Shinzon from a self-made audition tape. Filming began in December 2001, and a first cut of around 160 minutes was trimmed to under two hours. Released days before The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, it opened second in the US and earned $67 million worldwide, ending the Next Generation film series.
- 01Brent Spiner shares the story credit with John Logan and Rick Berman, as well as playing both Data and B-4.
- 02The first cut ran around 160 minutes. Wesley Crusher's dialogue was lost, though Wil Wheaton can still be glimpsed at the wedding.
- 03It opened at number two in the US, about $200,000 behind Maid in Manhattan.
- 04Shinzon, a clone of Picard, was one of Tom Hardy's first major film roles.
- Like Lore, Data's android brother first seen in TNG “Datalore” (1988), B-4 is another of Dr Soong's earlier creations.
- The Romulans first appeared in the original series episode “Balance of Terror” (1966), which also named their twin worlds, Romulus and Remus.
- Picard's grief for Data is picked up in Star Trek: Picard, beginning with “Remembrance” (2020).
Three Saturn Award nominations (science fiction film, costume, supporting actor for Tom Hardy)
