Kirk and his crew defy Starfleet and risk everything, including the Enterprise, on the slim hope that their lost friend can somehow be brought back.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
The damaged Enterprise returns to Earth, its crew still grieving for Spock. Starfleet intends to scrap the ship and declares the Genesis planet off limits. McCoy begins acting strangely, even speaking in Spock's voice, and Spock's father Sarek visits Kirk with an explanation: before he died, Spock placed his katra, his living spirit, in McCoy's mind. Both must be taken to Vulcan, along with Spock's body, or McCoy may not survive. The body, however, lies on Genesis, and Starfleet refuses to let Kirk go back.
So Kirk and his friends break the rules. Uhura deals with a transporter officer, Scotty sabotages the new USS Excelsior so it cannot give chase, and Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov steal the Enterprise. On Genesis, Saavik and David Marcus find Spock alive, reborn as a child whose body is ageing rapidly along with the unstable planet. David admits he used protomatter, a dangerous shortcut, to make Genesis work. The Klingon commander Kruge, convinced Genesis is a weapon, destroys the science ship Grissom and takes them prisoner.
When the Enterprise arrives, Kruge demands the secret of Genesis, and David is killed by one of his warriors. Kirk sets his own ship to self-destruct, wiping out the Klingon boarding party, and watches from the planet as the Enterprise burns across the sky. He fights Kruge on the collapsing world and sends him into a fiery chasm, then tricks his way aboard the Klingon Bird-of-Prey and escapes with Spock, now fully grown again. On Vulcan, the high priestess T'Lar performs the ancient fal-tor-pan ceremony to reunite Spock's spirit and body, a ritual that puts McCoy at great risk. Spock emerges unsteady and uncertain, but as he looks at Kirk, the memories begin to return, and he speaks his friend's name: Jim.
The success of The Wrath of Khan prompted Paramount to commission a third film. Leonard Nimoy, newly enthusiastic about Spock, pushed hard to direct and won over studio chief Michael Eisner, who had wrongly believed Nimoy disliked Star Trek. Harve Bennett produced and wrote the script in about six weeks, working backwards from the final scene in which Spock says Kirk's name. Robin Curtis took over as Saavik when Kirstie Alley did not return. Filming began on 15 August 1983, mostly on Paramount sound stages, and Industrial Light & Magic created the effects, including the new USS Excelsior and Spacedock. The film earned $87 million worldwide. Critics were generally positive, praising Nimoy's focus on the characters.
- 01Leonard Nimoy became the first Star Trek cast member to direct one of the films.
- 02Dame Judith Anderson was 87 when she played T'Lar, a role that earned her a Saturn Award nomination.
- 03Linguist Marc Okrand created the Klingon language for this film, building on the few words James Doohan devised for The Motion Picture.
- The story picks up directly from Spock's death and his mind meld with McCoy at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).
- Sarek first appeared in the original series episode “Journey to Babel” (1967), played then as now by Mark Lenard.
- The captured Klingon Bird-of-Prey becomes the crew's ship in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).
Hugo Award nominee; five Saturn Award nominations
