While Enterprise studies a third sphere, it rescues the crew of a damaged Triannon ship. Their leader, D'Jamat, explains that they are pilgrims who believe the spheres were built by divine Makers to turn the Expanse into a paradise. Once aboard, the Triannons reveal that their bodies carry explosives, and one detonates himself to prove their resolve. Archer surrenders the ship. D'Jamat plans to use Enterprise to end a century-long religious war on his homeworld, fought over whether creation took nine days or ten, and demands that a crew member be sacrificed for the ship's contact with the sphere. Archer offers himself and appears to be destroyed in the transporter, but survives and works with Phlox on an airborne agent to neutralise the explosives, helped by D'Jamat's deputy Yarrick. As rival Triannon ships attack, the crew retake Enterprise. Archer takes D'Jamat home, only to find his world devastated by the war.
