Near a nebula, Enterprise meets the Vulcan ship Vahklas, whose crew left Vulcan eight years earlier and asks for help with repairs. Its captain, Tavin, explains that they are V'tosh ka'tur, Vulcans without logic, who reject Surak's teachings and are learning to live with their emotions. Archer is intrigued by these more relaxed Vulcans, and Tucker gets on well with them. A crew member, Tolaris, takes a close interest in T'Pol, encouraging her to explore her feelings and her dreams. Curious, she agrees to try a meditation he suggests, and later accepts a mind meld, a practice the Vulcans of this era regard as taboo. When she tries to stop it, Tolaris refuses to let go. Archer confronts him and orders the Vahklas to leave once repairs are done. T'Pol, shaken, asks Archer whether he dreams, and quietly says she envies him.
- 01Originally titled “Equilibrium”, it was renamed because Deep Space Nine already had an episode of that name.
- 02Robert Pine, who plays Tavin, is the father of Chris Pine, Kirk in the J.J. Abrams films.
- 03The mind meld has consequences for T'Pol in season two's “Stigma”.
