Ten years before Kirk, the USS Shenzhou is sent to check a damaged interstellar relay on the edge of Federation space. First Officer Michael Burnham, a human raised on Vulcan by Sarek, makes a risky solo spacewalk to examine a mysterious object nearby and is attacked by an armoured Klingon, whom she kills in the struggle. The object is a beacon belonging to T'Kuvma, a zealot who dreams of uniting the scattered Klingon houses against the Federation. As his ship decloaks, Burnham consults Sarek, who tells her that Vulcans won Klingon respect by firing first. Captain Philippa Georgiou refuses to strike. Convinced she is right, Burnham disables Georgiou with a Vulcan nerve pinch and orders an attack, but Georgiou recovers and stops her just in time. The episode ends with a fleet of Klingon ships dropping out of warp around the Shenzhou.
