The Defiant picks up a distress call from Captain Lisa Cusak, stranded on a planet after her ship was destroyed. The atmosphere is slowly poisoning her, and she must ration her medication to survive until help arrives. The ship is days away, so the crew take turns keeping her company over the comm. Cusak is warm, funny and perceptive, and as the days pass several of the officers find themselves confiding in her and taking her advice to heart. Meanwhile, on the station, Quark tries to take advantage of Odo's preoccupation with planning a romantic evening with Kira to pull off a smuggling deal, but Odo stays a step ahead before finally taking pity on him. When the Defiant reaches the planet, the crew discovers that Cusak has been dead for about three years: an energy field around the planet had carried their conversations across time. Sisko gives her a proper Starfleet burial.

- 03The episode introduced the Chaffee shuttlecraft, designed by Doug Drexler and named after Apollo astronaut Roger Chaffee.
