Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Sisko finally catches up with Michael Eddington, the Starfleet officer who betrayed him and defected to the Maquis, but Eddington escapes after sabotage he left in the Defiant's computer leaves the ship barely working. Sisko takes the Defiant out anyway, with the crew running systems by hand. Eddington, speaking through a new holo-communicator, taunts his old captain, casting himself as the hero of Les Misérables and Sisko as the relentless Javert. He then attacks Cardassian colonies with a weapon that makes their air poisonous to Cardassians, and forces Sisko to abandon the chase to help stranded civilians. Realising that Eddington sees his life as a heroic story, Sisko decides to play the villain. He poisons a Maquis planet's atmosphere so that humans can no longer live there, and threatens to do the same to every Maquis world. Eddington gives himself up in return for Sisko stopping.
- 01A sequel to the fourth-season episode “For the Cause”, set around eight months later. The Eddington story concludes in “Blaze of Glory”.
- 02The holo-communicator, championed by Ronald D. Moore, debuts here. It appears only once more, in “Doctor Bashir, I Presume?”, before being dropped.
- 03The scenes of the crew running the damaged Defiant by hand were written as a homage to the 1958 submarine film Run Silent, Run Deep.
