Quark is told he has a fatal disease. Hoping to leave a respectable sum, he auctions off his own remains, and a buyer pays 500 bars of gold-pressed latinum. Then the diagnosis turns out to be wrong. The buyer is Brunt of the Ferengi Commerce Authority, who insists the contract be honoured, which means Quark must die. Breaking it would cost him his business licence and make him an outcast among his own people. Quark even considers hiring Garak to kill him, until a dream visit from Gint, the first Grand Nagus, persuades him to break the deal. He returns the money, Brunt strips him of his licence and his assets, and his friends on the station rally round to help him keep the bar going. Meanwhile pregnant Keiko O'Brien is injured in an accident, and Bashir saves both mother and baby by transferring the child to Kira, who agrees to carry it and moves in with the O'Briens.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01Nana Visitor's real-life pregnancy led the writers to transfer Keiko's baby to Kira, rather than hide the pregnancy with camera tricks.
  2. 02Max Grodénchik plays both Rom and, in Quark's dream, Gint, the first Grand Nagus.
  3. 03The seal Brunt places on the bar stays until season five's “Ferengi Love Songs”, when Brunt restores Quark's business licence.
