Ensign Melora Pazlar is an Elaysian, from a world with very low gravity, and must use a wheelchair and support frame on the station. Proud and prickly, she resents being treated as a special case, but Bashir wins her over and the two fall in love. Bashir develops a treatment that could let her walk unaided in normal gravity, though it would mean she could never comfortably return home. Meanwhile Fallit Kot, a criminal with a score to settle, arrives looking for Quark. When Kot kills his associate Ashrock and flees in a runabout with Quark, Dax and Melora as hostages, it is Melora who turns off the gravity and uses her natural ability to move in weightlessness to overpower him. She decides not to continue the treatment, choosing to remain who she is, and she and Bashir share an evening at the Klingon restaurant.
