A Cardassian passenger seeks treatment for Kalla-Nohra, a condition caught only by survivors of a mining accident at Gallitep, the most notorious labour camp of the occupation. Kira has him arrested as a war criminal. He calls himself Aamin Marritza, a lowly clerk, but a photograph suggests he is Gul Darhe'el, the infamous Butcher of Gallitep. Kira faces him across the interrogation table as Sisko weighs what to do. The pieces do not fit: Gul Dukat insists Darhe'el is dead, Darhe'el was never at Gallitep during the accident, and Bashir finds signs of cosmetic surgery. The prisoner really is Marritza, a man haunted by shame at having done nothing to stop the atrocities, who hoped a public trial would force Cardassia to admit its guilt. Moved, Kira releases him, but as he leaves a Bajoran stabs him to death. Asked why, the killer says it was enough that he was Cardassian.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01The story was inspired by Robert Shaw's The Man in the Glass Booth, about a man accused of being a Nazi war criminal. Its working title was “The Higher Law”.
  2. 02It was conceived as a low-cost bottle show to balance the budget after expensive first-season episodes.
  3. 03Michael Piller described it as probably the best show of the first season.
