A delegation of Federation ambassadors visits the station, and Sisko hands Dr Bashir the thankless job of looking after them. One of them, Lwaxana Troi, has her brooch stolen, and when Odo recovers it she sets her heart on him, to his horror. Meanwhile a probe from the Gamma Quadrant downloads a program into the station's computer. It turns out to be a non-sentient life form that attaches itself to O'Brien like a pet, causing malfunctions across the station, until he creates a safe space for it inside the computer. The failures put Bashir and his complaining ambassadors in danger, and he leads them to safety through a crawlspace, winning their respect. Lwaxana and Odo are trapped in a turbolift as the time nears when Odo must revert to liquid. Lwaxana takes off her wig and shows him her own vulnerability, and Odo trusts her enough to return to his natural state in her lap.
